Two Opportunities to Experience a Living Piece of Aviation History
The DC-3 Mainliner is heading to San Diego for two special appearances, giving aviation enthusiasts, students, and members of the community the opportunity to experience one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history up close.
The historic aircraft will first appear at California Aeronautical University’s San Diego campus at Montgomery-Gibbs Airport before spending the weekend on display at the MCAS Miramar Air Show. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the aircraft, learn about its remarkable history, and step aboard the DC-3 Mainliner.
Whether you’re a lifelong aviation enthusiast or experiencing the DC-3 for the very first time, these events offer a unique chance to connect with the aircraft that helped change air travel.
Stop One: Visit the DC-3 at CAU San Diego
The DC-3 Mainliner’s San Diego visit begins at California Aeronautical University’s (CAU) San Diego campus at Montgomery-Gibbs Airport (KMYF).
Students, aviation enthusiasts, and members of the local community are invited to stop by, explore the aircraft, and learn about the history of one of aviation’s most influential airliners. Guests will also have the opportunity to step aboard the aircraft and experience a living piece of aviation history firsthand.
As the operator of the DC-3 Mainliner, California Aeronautical University uses the aircraft as a flying classroom and storytelling platform, helping connect people with the history of flight while showcasing modern pathways into aviation careers.
Stop Two: The MCAS Miramar Air Show
Following its appearance at CAU, the DC-3 Mainliner will be on display throughout the MCAS Miramar Air Show.
Visitors will have the opportunity to get up close to the aircraft, learn about its history, shop the DC-3 Mainliner store, meet members of the DC-3 Mainliner team, and tour the aircraft for a suggested donation. Donations help support the preservation of this historic aircraft and its mission to educate and inspire future generations.
Known as one of the most influential aircraft ever built, the Douglas DC-3 transformed commercial aviation and helped usher in the Golden Age of Air Travel. More than 80 years after this aircraft was built, it continues to share that story with audiences across the country.
The Legacy of the DC-3 Mainliner
Built in 1945 near the end of World War II, the DC-3 Mainliner emerged from post-war surplus and went on to become part of American aviation history.
Among its many chapters, the aircraft served the American Embassy in Peru, the automotive industry through Rockwell Standard Steel Spring Company, and the State of Georgia during a period when President Jimmy Carter served as Governor.
A defining chapter in the aircraft’s story began when legendary aviator Clay Lacy acquired and restored it in an authentic United Airlines fleet livery. Following an extensive restoration, he christened the aircraft Mainliner O’Connor, preserving a remarkable piece of aviation history that remains flying today.
Today, the aircraft is cared for by owner Matt Johnston and operated by California Aeronautical University, where it continues to fly as a living ambassador for aviation history, education, and inspiration.
